The value of an engraved gift

engraved gift spoon

At Engravers Guild, all of our engraved gifts are carefully selected and are of the highest quality in finish and design.

However, we have always believed that the real value of our gifts is in the engraving – that personal touch which makes the item totally unique and captures a moment forever.

We were therefore not surprised to read about an engraved item up for auction, which surpassed all estimated bids.

A silver spoon that dates from 1684 had a pre-sale estimate of £1,000, but went under the hammer this week for £11,500.

The engraving on the handle reads: “This Spoon was bought upon the Frozen Thames * January:28:1683/4”. It was made to record the fair that took place on the Thames when the river froze.

We could not agree with Alex Butcher, a silver specialist, more: “The engraving on it makes all the difference”.
